Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

Illustration: Elvis Presley's leather suit is just one of the exhibits at
Cleveland's Rock and Roll hall of Fame.

The leather outfit worn by Elvis Presley in a 1968 television special; Michael Jackson's sequined glove; handwritten song lyrics by Chuck Berry and Bruce Springsteen; John Lennon's wire-rimmed glasses and an elementary-school report card that labled this future Beatle as "Hopeless." These are amoung the most popular displays at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, a place packed with memorabilia, film and video clips, and interactive displays highlighting roch history.

The Rock and roll Hall of Fame was founded in 1983, but it took 12 years to design and build a permanent home for it. Cleveland was chosen as the site of the museum after businesses raised $87 million for it's construction. The city has strong links to rock history- Cleveland deejay Alan Freed was the one who popularized the phrase "rock and roll" in the mid 1950's

The 6 story museum, designed by I.M. Pei, is situated on the shore of Lake erie. The museum's exhibits trace the history of rock, from it's roots in the blues music of the 1940's to today's rap. Interactive computer displays allow visitors to discover links between early rock greats and later performers. Life-sized, costumed mannequins portray the stars. On the top floor, more than 120 members of the Rock and roll Hall of fame are honored in a special gallery.

DID YOU KNOW....Viewed from the air, the museum building looks like a record player, with a turntable and a stack of 45's.
